Serious depression affects 14.8 million adults in any given year, about 6.7% of the US adult population.

Psychiatric illness is often marked by abnormal brain function resulting in deteriorated mood, appetite, sleep, energy, motivation, memory, and concentration. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who treats such symptoms.

In some cases, psychotherapy is sufficient. In others medication is necessary. Successful treatment with psychiatric medication often involves dosage adjustment and trials of different drugs. The goal is always maximize response and minimize side effects. The expectation is symptom remission.

A successful outcome depends on close cooperation between patient and doctor, and persistence on the part of both.

A psychiatric illness is in many ways similar to medical conditions like asthma and diabetes. The patient can expect a good response to prompt and effective treatment. Most patients can reasonably expect to resume a symptom-free life."
